Introduction To Owen Shaw
Owen Shaw is the owner and founder of FREIGHTMAC is excited about the future of FREIGHTMAC and is committed to developing the company into a recognised provider of consulting services to importers, exporters and the freight industry.
Owen is well experienced in Freight Management having been involved for 42 years. He has served on three fronts of Freight Management. Firstly as a Customs Officer then moving to the mainline Clearing and Forwarding Industry. Owen also served with a major chemical importer as a Shipping Manager for some years before moving back to Clearing and Forwarding.
While serving with the Clearing and Forwarding Industry Owen has held senior management positions including as Regional Director for a major South African Clearing and Forwarding company. He has also gained specialised experience in Chemicals; Oil & Gas; Automotive and Customs Brokerage.
Owen has an IATA Airfreight Diploma; FIATA Freight Forwarding Diploma and SAAFF Customs Affairs Diploma. He also has a DHL First Choice (Six Sigma) qualification.
Owen started his career in 1974 as a Customs Officer in Rhodesia. He gained invaluable commercial experience while serving with Customs at Border Posts; International Airports and clearance of surface cargo (Rhodesia had no seaports).
Following Zimbabwe independence Owen left customs and joined the Clearing and Forwarding Industry in Zimbabwe with Eximp and Astra Shipping (Barlows) before joining a major Chemical trader AI Davis as Shipping Manager. While serving with AI Davis Owen has excellent exposure to trading and especially countertrade. This has left Owen with an appetite for trading, chemicals and given him an entrepreneurial spirit. .
In 1987 Owen left Zimbabwe and moved to Durban where he took up a position with Safcor (Bidvest Logistics). Owen headed up the Customs Entry Department. Owen rates his time with Safcor as the equivalent of three years of tertiary education. This set the base for Owen’s future career.
Following Safcor Owen joined Freightech and was exposed to military exports for a year before taking up a position with Turners Shipping in 1991. Within one year Owen was promoted to Regional Director at Turners. Owen was directly responsible for Turner’s Oil and Gas business.
In 2002 Owen left Turners taking up a position with legacy DHL company Eagle Freight as Regional Executive KZN. Eagle was sold to Exel and then Exel to DHL. Owen retained his seniority during these changes and headed up DHL KZN until 2013. From 2013 Owen was Head : Chemicals and Commodities (Southern Africa) for DHL Global Forwarding. DHL offered early retirement packages in 2015. Owen took the option.
Since heading up Freightmac Owen has been involved with varied Consulting tasks including Bond Store Audits; Management of Logistics for Trading companies; assisting a major construction company in setting up efficient controls on vehicle and machinery movements into and out of South Africa.
Owen brings a unique blend of experience to the Freight Consulting arena.
Owen prides himself as a person who gets things done, makes decisions and takes his customers business forward. Owen is not afraid to take on a new task and quickly gets to the nuts and bolts of how a process operates and gives recommendations for improvement.
Nothing is too small or too big.
Owen has been married to Elaine for 37 years. Both his son and daughter are happily married and have successful careers. Owen recently became a Grandfather. Owen’s passion is overland exploration of the wild places of Africa. He has camped in remote areas from the Skeleton Coast of Namibia to the shores of Lake Malawi. His travels give him the opportunity to take advantage of his other passion which is photography.
